Computer games have come a long way since the black-and-white days of Space Invaders, and gamers have become an ever-more demanding bunch.
We expect storylines to rival Hollywood movies, a cinema-quality soundtrack, and a perfect blend of mindless action and brain-melting puzzles. Not much to ask, is it?
Well, sometimes a little nostalgia is a good thing. Classic games like Space Invaders and Robotron are the purest examples of what shoot-'em-up games should be. They're easy to pick up and play, difficult to put down, and require nothing short of Ninja-like hand-eye coordination to master.
Pompom's Space Tripper is yet another in a long line of shoot-'em-up games, all of which cloned and refined themselves from the original Space Invaders blueprint.
But times have moved on. Gone are the simple 2D black-and-white visuals. In their place, Space Tripper provides stunning 3D backgrounds, a feast of colour and a block-rocking soundtrack. Controls are limited to moving your spaceship around with the cursor keys, in addition to the obligatory fire button, while another key chooses which direction to face.
Mastering the controls takes a little time, but the simple addition of a facility that lets the player face forwards or backwards completely changes the tactics available to you. It also makes the game pretty darned hectic at times, with the progressively trickier levels forcing you to move, flip direction and fire - all while maintaining pinpoint accuracy.
Space Tripper is a little gem. It won't flex those brain muscles to any considerable extent, but it's top mindless entertainment at a bargain-basement price. And even if it isn't educational, it'll give your reflexes one hell of a workout.
