After successfully making the transition to 3D, the Prince of Persia is back demonstrating his Warrior Within. The plot sees the Prince travelling back in time to prevent the Sands of Time from being created, lest the demon Dahaka destroy him.
Mind-bending time travel aside, the plot serves merely to introduce a new element to the game: playing the same levels in the present and the past. As you switch between the two using the handily placed time portals, the fortress around you shifts between a new construction and a ruined shell.
This game is more combat-based than its predecessor and introduces new combos and moves. Even so, it is very hard; the game has no concept of a learning curve and dumps you straight into the action where you have to fight one of the boss characters. She's very difficult to beat until you realise that the fancy combo moves are pointless and simple blocks and strikes are the way to go.
There's still the platform element of the game, where the Prince can run up walls, sidle along ledges and swing on ropes. Sadly, the control system is very difficult to get used to, as it's relative to the camera's point of view. It's all too easy to run off the side of a platform as the camera angle changes. Fortunately you have the ability, through the Sands of Time, to rewind the action by up to eight seconds to undo untimely deaths.
While fun to play, the control system and endless combat detract from the game, making it frustrating. This is one for fans of the original.
