Huby is an octopus for peripherals

LaCie has unveiled what must be one of the oddest and most striking computer peripherals ever made - the eight-armed Huby.

Designed by Paris-based Ora-?o, the Huby (pronounced hub-ee) bursts into eight flexible cables at the end of which are to be found four USB 2.0 ports, two FireWire 400 ports, a fan and a light.

All six IO ports can be used simultaneously to connect devices such as external storage drives, printers, media readers, keyboards and mice to a Mac, Linux or Windows computer. Eight different coloured LEDs indicate when a device is plugged in. And if support for six devices is insufficient, Hubys can be daisy-chained via FireWire or USB.

'LaCie has a history of merging innovative technology with forward-thinking design, for which we consistently receive accolades,' said Alexis Kobassian, product manager. 'Even something as simple as a hub can be viewed as a design object. LaCie Huby's unique shape sets it apart from any other hub on the market. It serves a function, but we also hope it sparks conversation about technology and design.'

LaCie Huby will cost around £69 (inc. VAT) when it ships in late December. For more information go to lacie.com/uk/products.
