Exclusive First Look: Toshiba Satellite U300-113

It's usual to expect to have to pay a lot more for an ultra-portable notebook, but with Toshiba's ultra-portable U300-113 you can get a computer that weighs just 2kg for less than £700. While cheap notebooks often look ugly, the U300-113 has a stylish silver and black chassis and attractive dark-blue lid.

The 13.3in screen's pretty good and comfortable to use for long periods of time. Ultra-portables often suffer from cramped keyboards, but the U300-113's is pretty good. Some keys, such as the Function keys, are a little small, but it's still possible to type long documents comfortably
As ultra-portables are designed to be used away from the mains and carried around all day, battery life is critical. This is one area where the U300-113 let us down slightly, though. Running for just over three hours in our light-usage test, it's barely enough power for a short-haul European flight, let alone a day's worth of computing.

Still, for £700 it's not bad value and you can find out how well it performs by reading the full review in our November issue, on sale from Thursday September 13th 2007.
