Apple prepping .Mac overhaul?
Posted on 7 Aug 2007 at 09:35
Apple has scheduled .Mac "maintenance" to coincide with this evening's press event, prompting speculation that it may be about to overhaul the suite of Internet-based applications and services.
The event kicks off at 6pm BST; at the same time .Mac members may be unable to access some services, according to a note at mac.com.
An overhaul of .Mac is long overdue, with much of what it offers - for a £69 annual fee - is available for free elsewhere, although its support for syncing data between Macs is unrivalled.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has intimated on a number of occasions that the service is lagging, most recently in an interview with the Wall Street Journal when he said "we'll make up for lost time in the near future".
.Mac aside, the event is expected to focus on new aluminium iMacs. Confined to just 20in and 24in models, the new desktops' specifications will closely match those of the upgraded MacBook Pros introduced in June.
There is also talk that Jobs may also unveil a new version of the iLife suite ahead of its inclusion with October's release of OS X 10.5 Leopard.
