Apple no longer AppleWorks
Posted on 16 Aug 2007 at 10:31
Apple has ditched AppleWorks, its veteran software suite. The old AppleWorks URL now points to its successor iWork.
The demise of AppleWorks is not unexpected given that in the last few years the suite has languished, the only update of note was to make it run natively in Mac OS X. It has never been adapted to run natively on Intel Macs.
However it does mean that Mac users no longer have access to a basic database application, a gap that third-party developers should be encouraged to fill. Apple does have a collection of powerful database applications, albeit produced by its FileMaker subsidiary, but prices start at £219. AppleWorks sold for around £65. It remains to be seen whether some of FileMaker's technology makes its way into an iWork database application.
A new version of iWork was introduced last week, the first to include the spreadsheet application Numbers.
