Next Wii won't be 3D

Despite Nintendo's up-coming foray into the world of 3D gaming with the 3DS handheld, it looks like the next generation replacement for the Wii will not feature 3D capabilities.
CrunchGear quotes an interview in German magazine Spiegel with Shigeru Miyamoto in which the Nintendo head states - in translated form - that "I don't think that the next step [in home 3D gaming] will be ours."
Answering the question "will there be a 3D Wii," Miyamoto discounted the possibility, claiming that the 3DS is only possible "because it is a portable console" and doesn't need expensive additional equipment and 3D glasses. While not ruling the possibility out for the future, Miyamoto stated that "it will take some time before enough households have 3D TVs" and making a 3D console is financially viable.
The news will come as a surprise to those who see 3D gaming as the next logical step: with Sony's PlayStation 3 already supporting 3D displays - and the next-generation update to the Xbox line from Microsoft almost certainly joining the fray - it seems that the next Wii could be left out. However, the Wii remains the only console of the current generation which doesn't support HD resolutions - a fact which has not hurt its sales one bit.
