Ubisoft enters the world of film

Games publisher Ubisoft has announced its plans to branch out into the world of film following the success of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time adaptation starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
The company, which is responsible for franchises including Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell, will create a spin-off enterprise - Ubisoft Motion Pictures - specifically for the purposes of adapting its games into films and TV programmes, entertainment watcher Variety reports.
Ubisoft's announcement follows the success of the 2010 film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, loosely based on Ubisoft's 2003 reboot of the 1989 Apple II platformer created by Jordan Mechner, which grossed an estimated $335 million world-wide.
The newly created studio will use in-house talent, including animation studio Ubisoft Digital Arts and wholly owned visual effects subsidiary Hybride Technologies, to bring Ubisoft's characters to life on the big screen.
So far, the company hasn't confirmed which of its titles will be the first to get the film treatment via Ubisoft Motion Pictures, but odds are good that its popular psuedo-historical sci-fi epic Assassin's Creed, which has already spawned a series of books, is high on the list.
