First Look: Cooler Master Hyper TX 2

Cooler Master is positioning its Hyper TX 2 against Arctic Cooling's excellent and cheap Freezer Pro models. The TX 2 is a shade cheaper at £10 from www.yoyotech.co.uk, but works with both AMD and Intel LGA775 processors; Arctic Cooling sells different models for AMD and Intel. It comes with Intel push-in connectors attached, but it's simple to unscrew these and attach AMD clips instead.

The TX 2 is a similar size to the Freezer Pro models, standing 92mm high. It should fit in most cases, but measure before you buy. Three heatpipes distribute heat from the processor to aluminium cooling fins, while a 92mm fan helps remove the heat.

Although the fan has a three- rather than four-pin power connector, giving the motherboard less control over fan speed, the TX 2 is very quiet at a maximum of 22dBA. At full speed we could only hear a faint hum when putting our ear close to the fan. Inside a closed case, it'll make for a very quiet PC.

Cooling is effective, too. With a stock Intel cooler our Core 2 Duo E6300 processor ran at 41C when idle and 45C under load; with the TX 2 it ran at 28C when idle and 35C under load.

With a very low price, compatibility with AMD and Intel processors, and effective cooling, the Hyper TX 2 is excellent value and a great upgrade from stock coolers. It comes highly recommended.
