PDF approved as international standard
Posted on 5 Dec 2007 at 12:56
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has voted to approve Adobe's PDF as an international document format standard.
The vote was passed with 13-to-one in favour and PDF is set to become the ISO 32000 Standard.
As a result Adobe will no longer have sole control over what is already the de facto standard for sharing, editing and commenting on documents between multiple platforms.
"Adobe will be just one of many implementors of that standard. Adobe expects to participate on the ISO committees determining changes that should be included in a revised standard," explained James King, a senior principal scientist and PDF architect at Adobe.
It is a change that King welcomes, though he accepts that there is much to be done.
"The challenging part will be to get people to participate in the next release of the standard. Lots of people want standards but it takes a measurable resource commitment to participate."
The ISO is expected to publish the approved standard sometime next year, incorporating a number of comments from member countries that voted in favour.
