An FTP (file transfer protocol) program may seem an odd inclusion among backup software.

In fact, WS_FTP has some very good backup features. Using either the Backup or Schedule option, you can create regular, scheduled and encrypted backup jobs that move data not only to FTP sites via the web, but also to local storage such as network or external hard drives if that's what you want. This is particularly useful if you want to schedule backups via a wireless broadband connection, as security is crucial. The user interface is a little cluttered, but once you've got the hang of it, it's easy to see at a glance what locations you can transfer files to and from.

For £47 you can buy a service agreement along with this software, but for home users the basic technical support should be perfectly adequate, so you can save your money.
