iCab returns to boost Mac browser options
Posted on 3 Jan 2008 at 10:26
As blasts from the past go, the return of iCab is about as big as it gets. Once a reliable browser alternative to Internet Explorer and Netscape in the pre-OS X days, iCab has since languished, largely forgotten. But not by its developer Alexander Clauss, who has completely rewritten the browser in OS X's native Cocoa language and chosen Apple's increasingly popular WebKit engine to handle the all-important task of drawing web pages.
On the face of it, iCab is pretty similar to most of the other Mac browsers out there, though if out first run is any indication its performance beats most. Where it differentiates itself, is in features such as the Kiosk mode, error handling, zip archiving of web pages, and the download and link managers. It also has powerful Preferences options, offering a large degree of control over features including tabs and contextual menus.
Website developers will appreciate tools such as the error handler, which details all HTML errors in web pages, and the source code manager.
iCab is available for free from icab.de though €25 will remove the occasional "shareware" reminder and provide earlier access to new beta versions.
