Hard disks to become larger and lighter
Posted on 24 Jan 2008 at 14:54
Hard disk manufacturer Western Digital has announced that its Caviar line of internal hard disks will now use 320GB platters.
The first Caviar hard disk to use these larger platters is a 320GB hard disk, which is available immediately. The rest of Western Digital's internal hard disks will move over to the new 320GB platter technology in the coming year.
Platters are the circular components of a hard disk on which data is stored. Higher density platters can be used in two ways: to create low-capacity hard disks that are lighter and less bulky; or to make high-capacity hard disks with even more storage space.
Despite Western Digital's claims that its 320GB platters are the densest in the world, Samsung's latest Spinpoint F1 range of hard disks have even denser 333GB platters. Look out for Computer Shopper's review of the 750GB and 1TB Spinpoint F1 hard disks in our April issue.
