Time Capsule delayed until March

Leopard users looking forward to wireless Time Machine backups to Apple's new Time Capsule may have to wait a little longer than expected.

Although the US Apple Store continues to give a February shipping date for the combined backup drive and wireless router, the UK website is now saying that it will ship in three to four weeks, which means the first units will now not arrive until the first week of March at the earliest.

There is also some confusion over the exact capabilities of the device, with he Time Capsule pages on the Apple website giving a misleading picture.

Under the Wireless heading, Apple states that the Time Capsule's hard drive is not restricted to Leopard users running Time Machine.

"Because it mounts as a wireless hard drive, Tiger and Windows users simply access Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily," it explains.

But under Tech Specs, the picture is muddied.

In a table, Apple says that only an external hard drive connected via Time Capsule's USB port can be accessed from Tiger and Windows as an AirPort Disk - Apple's name for a disk shared wirelessly.

The discrepancy has prompted an inconclusive thread on Apple Discussions, but awaits clarification from Apple.
