Apple tight-lipped on BBC iTunes rumour

Apple and the BBC have declined to comment on a report that claims that BBC TV programmes will be available from next week on the iTunes Store.

An industry insider said that BBC Worldwide, the corporation's commercial arm, will make an announcement tomorrow, having informed outside production companies of its plans.

Currently BBC content is available for free via the corporation's iPlayer software. But only Windows users can download rather than stream programmes. iTunes would extend that to Mac users, but at a price. Apple currently charges £1.89 to buy a single episode from the limited selection currently available.

Ashley Highfield, the BBC's head of Future Media & Technology, hinted last month that the company was interested in renting its programmes to owners of Apple TV, but said that this was not a priority for the broadcaster.
