Freebox charges for satellite broadband

Freebox, which has been offering Internet connectivity via a free set top box, has launched a broadband satellite deal, but this time you'll have to pay.

The service will provide always-on 128Kbits/sec access for £14.99 a month, with a £249 installation fee.

Broadband connection via satellite is more expensive than ADSL and usually one-way. Users wishing to upload material will have to buy a 56K dial-up modem.

Chris Miles, business development manager of Globalwave, which will implement Freebox's service, said that satellite's advantage is that it can deliver "digital quality TV and content... direct to your drive. ADSL and cable are not very good at delivering huge amounts of multimedia content."
