Twitter and Facebook attacks directed at one user
Posted on 7 Aug 2009 at 17:25
The attack that brought down Twitter and slowed down Facebook was directed at a single user, it has been revealed today.
According to the BBC the attacks were all targeted at Pro-Georgian blogger, Cyxymu.
"[The] attack appears to be directed at an individual who has a presence on a number of sites, rather than the sites themselves," a Facebook spokesperson told the BBC.
The Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks were directed specifically at Cyxymu's various profiles on different sites, but were so ferocious that they brought down twitter and degraded the Facebook service.
So far no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, although Cyxymu has told the Guardian that he believes that it was ordered by the Russian government.
