Toshiba finally decides to make Blu-ray players
Posted on 10 Aug 2009 at 10:07
Toshiba has finally admitted defeat in its battle to convince people that its upscaling DVD players were as good as proper HD and has applied to join the Blu-ray Disc Association.
The move is a drastic about turn for the company that seemingly wanted to pretend that Blu-ray didn't exist after its own HD format, HD DVD, failed due to all of the major film studios pulling their support, almost two years ago.
Following the demise of HD DVD, Toshiba stubbornly refused to back Blu-ray, putting its attention instead into making upscaling DVD players, which it claimed were all anyone needed. The company seemed to pay no attention to the irony of the fact that it believed its customers did need real HD when the disc format was its own 'The Look and Sound of Perfect' HD DVD.
Despite Toshiba's best efforts, Blu-ray has become the dominant HD format and not to make compatible products would be folly. Assuming its membership is accepted, the company plans to release Blu-ray players and Blu-ray PC drives this year.
