Philips shows off Wireless HDMI kit

Philips has launched a Wireless HDMI transmitter and receiver kit that allows you to connect your Blu-ray player to your TV without cables.

The Wireless HDTV Link is based on Philips' own proprietary technology as there isn't currently an industry standard for wireless HDMI, so it is unlikely to work with any other future wireless HDMI kit from other manufacturers. The kit should work with any TV and playback device, such as games consoles, DVD or Blu-ray players, and not just models by Philips.

The transmitter has two HDMI ports and two sets of component inputs for connecting playback devices. The content is then sent to the receiver which is surprisingly large, but it can be mounted on the back of your TV.

Philips claims that the kit has a range of about 20 metres. According to Richard Wolfe, a Philips spokesperson at the IFA conference in Berlin, the Wireless HDTV Link operates on a 5GHz wireless frequency that shouldn??t suffer any interference from sources such as cordless phones and most wireless networks.

Philips has yet to decide on a UK launch date, but if it does become available in Britain it??s likely to be very expensive. The kit is due to be available shortly in France and Germany at a price of around 400 Euro (around £350).
