Apple quits US business body over green snub

Apple has resigned from the US Chamber of Commerce in protest at its opposition to President Obama’s efforts to cut carbon emissions.

Catherine Novelli, Apple}s vice president of Worldwide Government Affairs, said that the Chamber’s position is at odds with Apple’s commitment to protecting the environment.

“We strongly object to the Chamber’s recent comments opposing the [Environmental Protection Agency] EPA’s effort to limit greenhouse gases,” she wrote.

“Apple supports regulating greenhouse gas emissions, and it is frustrating to find the Chamber at odds with us in this effort.”

With climate-campaigner Al Gore on its board, it is no surprise that Apple has significantly raised its green profile over the past couple of years, notably by eliminating toxic substances from its products while using more recyclable materials such as aluminium and glass.

Most recently, it revamped the environment section of its website to give details of the impact of its products throughout their life cycle. At the same time, chief executive Steve Job told BusinessWeek that the company wants to be judged on its performance, not on promise to cut emissions.

“We tend to report rather than predict,” Jobs said. “You won’t see us out there saying what the PC is going to look like in 2016. We quietly go try to invent the PC for 2016.”
