TomTom launches new entry-level satnav: the Start
Posted on 7 Oct 2009 at 09:11
TomTom claims that its new Start satnav is the ultimate in easy-to-use route planning.
The Start is aimed at occasional drivers, or first-time satnav users. The simplified menu (compared to models in the Go range) displays just two buttons upon startup: Plan route and Browse map, which means even novices can get from A to B without hassle. Safety cameras are pre-installed onto the device, too.
If you buy a version with a single-region map (UK & Ireland, for example) a Start will cost you £120 from TomTom's website, so it isn't exactly cheap compared to the lowest-priced models from rivals, which can be picked up for well under £100. Opt for a Start with European maps, and the price rises to £140. Still, it has a 3.5in screen, IQ Routes - for intelligent route planning - and a slim EasyPort mount, making the whole device small enough to carry everywhere with you.
Following the current trend for personalisation, the Start is available in either black or white, but you can also buy so-called StartSkins, which are changeable coloured covers which themselves come with matching carry bags. Users can also download personalised startup screens, new voices and other content via Home, TomTom's PC software.
As soon as a Start arrives in our Labs, we'll bring you a full review.
