Hackers have broken into The Guardian's jobs website, stealing personal information belonging to hundreds of thousands of job seekers.
A security breach on 23 October resulted in the personal details of approximately 500,000 job seekers being stolen. The website allows employment seekers to store copies of their CVs online and send them to potential employers who are advertising vacancies.
The Guardian states that its jobs website has over 10,000,000 users. The national newspaper emailed the 500,000 users affected by the security breach on 24 October, advising them of the steps to take to prevent identity theft arising from the stolen data.
The incident has been reported to the police and The Guardian states that the third party contractor hired to run the jobs website has taken steps to prevent a similar security breach from reoccurring.
