Apple plugs in Apple TV 3

Apple has released a new version of the software that drives Apple TV, its box that connects your Mac to an HDTV or home theatre system.

Apple TV 3.0 software as a redesigned main menu to simplify the navigation of content stored on the device itself or streamed from iTunes on a Mac (or PC).

As well a movies, music and photos, that content can now include the new iTunes LPs and iTunes Extras, the latter featuring the kind of “bonus” content that was previously only to be found on movie DVDs.

The update also provides support for iTunes Genius mixes and for internet radio.

Apple TV 3.0 is available as a free automatic download. Apple TV is available for a suggested retail price of £219.

Once the update is installed, users will have to update any existing iTunes LP or Extras content before it will play on Apple TV. Apple provides instructions in Updating iTunes Extras and LP content for your Apple TV.

Apple has also released an update to iTunes, adding the new Apple TV software as well as an option for a dark background for Grid View and accessibility improvements. Once again, the update prevents syncing with the Palm Pre phone.
