Apple stores "are too small"

Apple is poised to open its 270th store in the heart of New York this weekend, but according to its retail boss the company has no plans of slowing up.
Ron Johnson told journalists at the preview of the hugely impressiveUpper West Side store that the current stores “are too small”. So future stores will be bigger—at least three tables wide, Johnson said—and will be opening at a faster rate. The company plans at least 50 for next year, including new outlets in the UK.
Apple’s retail venture has been a phenomenal success. In 2001 the company’s total sales were $5.4 billion; in the past 12 months the retail stores alone have garnered almost $6.6 billion.
The stores have received 170 million visitors this year, but aren’t only popular with the customers, they are also having no problems in attracting staff. Johnson revealed that the company has 100,000 applicants on file, while for the newest store 10,000 people applied for just 200 jobs.
