BitTorrent site Mininova forced to drop illegal content
Posted on 27 Nov 2009 at 15:42
Mininova.org, one of the most popular websites for trading files using BitTorrent, has been forced by a Dutch court to stop listing pirated content.
Most of the content traded using the site are pirated files shared without the permission of the copyright holder, such as movies and video games. The Netherlands-based site was forced by a Dutch court ruling to remove links to all copyrighted-content.
The removal of links to pirated content obviously removes much of Mininova's appeal to most file sharers. Mininova had tried unsuccessfully to develop a filtering system so that it could continue to distribute copyrighted files for which it did have permission to share.
Mininova is appealing the court's ruling, but for now file sharers will have to use competing sites such as the popular Pirate Bay.
