Seagate to launch slimmer laptop hard disks
Posted on 10 Dec 2009 at 10:45
Hard disk manufacturer Seagate has announced the Momentus Thin, a new series of internal laptop hard disks that are even slimmer than existing disks.
Current 2.5in internal laptop hard disks have a thickness of either 9.5 or 12.5mm. The Momentus Thin will be 7mm thick. Although this doesn't sound like a huge difference, these new slimmer disks should allow for even slimmer versions of products that depend on a hard disk, such as laptops and netbooks. Most laptops use 9.5mm thick disks.
Although 12.5mm disks currently have larger capacities than 9.5mm disks, they're rarely used in laptops which are designed to take 9.5mm disks.
Seagate hasn't announced capacities or pricing for the Momentus Thin series - more details will be forthcoming at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) at Las Vegas in January. Hopefully, the Momentus Thin will be faster, cheaper and have more capacity than 1.8in disks which are currently used in Apple's iPod classic and a few laptops such as the MacBook Air.
