Yahoo! comes under attack for 'reckless' China stance
Posted on 18 Jan 2010 at 15:15
Internet giant Yahoo! has come under fire from Alibaba, the firm's partner in China, for showing support to archrival Google's standoff with the Chinese government over the alleged cyber attacks which could have involved as many as 34 separate companies.
The search company agreed with Google's position that the violation of Internet privacy was deeply disturbing ad that something needed to be done, but Alibaba spokesperson John Spelich said it did not "share this view".
The Chinese government tried to play down Google's threat to pull out of China last week, but Google has racked up support from various communities. The US state department said Friday that it would make a formal protest about the incident and demand an explanation from China.
Yahoo! closed its Chinese operations a number of years ago after selling most of its business to Alibaba, which runs Taobao, China's largest online retailer, and Alibaba.com, the country's largest e-commerce site.
Spelich said that Alibaba had spoken to Yahoo and told it that its decision to announce that it supported Google's stance was "reckless given the lack of facts in evidence".
