Google drops Internet Explorer support in Apps
Posted on 3 Feb 2010 at 14:53
Google has announced that its Apps suite, including Google Docs, will no longer support Internet Explorer 6 and other out of date browsers.
"In order to continue to improve our products and deliver more sophisticated features and performance, we are harnessing some of the latest improvements in web browser technology. This includes faster JavaScript processing and new standards like HTML5. As a result, over the course of 2010, we will be phasing out support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as other older browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers," said the company in an official statement.
From 1st March 2010 support for older browsers will be phased out in the Google Docs suites and Google Sites editor. Users of old browsers will find that these applications may have higher latency in use or may not work correctly. Google Apps will continue to work correctly in Internet Explorer 7 and above, Firefox 3 and above, Google Chrome 4.0 and above, and Safari 3.0 and above.
The move comes after Microsoft admitted that a flaw in IE6 was used by Chinese hackers to attack Google. Since then, the backlash against Internet Explorer has been harsh and has even led to the German government telling web users to ditch IE completely.
