Virgin Media runs broadband to rural locations using telegraph poles
Posted on 11 Mar 2010 at 15:06
Virgin Media is trialling running its fibre optic network above ground using telegraph poles in order to provide up to one-million homes with super-fast broadband up to 100Mbit/s.
The trial will take place in the Berkshire village of Woolhampton, offering its residence broadband through Virgin Media's network. All of the homes will also be offered digital TV.
"This unique trial will allow us to understand the possibilities of aerial deployment and may provide an exciting new way to extend next generation broadband services. With everything from BBC iPlayer to YouTube increasingly demanding reliable ultrafast broadband speeds, we're keen to ensure that all communities, in towns, cities and villages right across the UK, stand to benefit," said Neil Berkett, CEO of Virgin Media.
The company is hoping that the trial will show how using overhead cabling and existing underground ducts could significantly reduce the cost of delivering high-speed broadband and digital TV services to rural communities.
