Skype offers free WiFi
Posted on 19 Mar 2010 at 15:09
Skype has a treat for anyone hoping to get online for free this weekend: free Internet access at over 100,000 hotspots across the globe.
The freebie comes as the company celebrates the official launch of Skype Access, a partnership with certain hotspot providers that allows you to pay for your wireless access using your Skype credit - meaning you don't need to share your credit card details with the provider itself.
The service is available to anyone using the latest version of Skype, and in order to drum up some interest the company is allowing anyone to try Skype Access free of charge over this weekend, starting midnight on Saturday and running right through until 2359 on Sunday.
As reported over on Ubergizmo, Skype is offering an extra bonus to those travelling to or from the UK this weekend: free access at UK airports the end of Monday, in case you're delayed by the impending strike action.
A full list of the hotspot providers participating in the offer can be found on Skype's website.
Once the free weekend offer is over, Skype Access will turn into an 11p-per-minute service service funded by the money in your Skype account - potentially making it both more convenient and cheaper for quick e-mail checks than most per-hour services.
