The Government has finally recognised the historic importance of the Bletchley Park WWII code-breaking site, and has announced it will be giving £250,000 for urgent repairs.
Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw was at the park today to announce the allocation of the money from the Department of Cultrue, Media and Sport (DCMS).
"The work carried out at Bletchley Park had a huge impact on the course of the war, and the museum does a brilliant job in bringing this alive for people of all ages. But having doubled its visitor numbers over the last three years, it urgently needs funds to keep it in good condition. I am delighted to announce this grant which will help renovate the buildings and ensure that future visitors enjoy a really high quality experience when they come here,” said Bradshaw.
The funding was warmly received by the Park, which has struggled for official help in recent years.
"This enormously-appreciated funding boost will not only enable vital repair and maintenance of this World War Two site for the benefit of our rapidly growing number of visitors but it also represents endorsement by the DCMS that Bletchley Park is a place of national importance which deserves Government support," said Simon Greenish, CEO of the Bletchley Park Trust.
The code-breaking at Bletchley Park helped shorten the war and is credited with saving countless lives. The Park is open to the public for tours and special events are held regularly.
On Sunday 30 and Monday 31 May there will be a Forties Family Festival, celebrating 65 years since VE day. The festival will showcase life in WWII, and will have the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Flypast, featuring a Lancaster and a Dakota. See the official website for more information.
