Clara tops broadband speed league

Adslguide.org has published the results of its latest speed test for UK broadband suppliers, with Clara.net coming out on top.
The tests rank sites by average downstream speeds for 512k connections. Clara.net averaged 446kbps, marginally ahead of Zen (441), One.Tel (437) and Nildram (436). Andrews and Arnold, Freeserve, Demon, Eclipse, BT Openworld and Mailbox complete the top ten.
Not that that will be any compensation for the people of an Oxfordshire village whose attempt to set up wireless broadband access was scuppered by Government regulations.
As ISP Review reports, Roy Bellis, technical director of Community Internet, wanted to create the wireless network in his home village and estimated that the service could be profitable with just 50 users - fewer than BT requires before it will enable rural exchanges with ADSL. However regulations state that providing service to any more than 20 users requires a licence, and that could cost some £40,00 in legal fees. On the bright side, an EU directive will abolish this rule next July.
