How to be safe online
Posted on 3 Sep 2002 at 13:00
A new Web site bids to make the Internet a place safe for kids.
The website BeSafeOnline.org offers advice for safe surfing, reports the BBC. The site is intended to give adults a set of safety guidelines for kids and teenagers.
Produced by SUSI (Safer Use of Services on the Internet), there are sections on Golden Rules to follow, the use of email, instant messaging and safe shopping online.
The ten Golden Rules include such commonsense advice as for kids not to give out personal information, such as names or phone numbers, for adults to become familiar with the sites their children are using, to encourage children to immediately report anything that makes them feel uncomfortable, and to keep the Internet as a family activity, i.e. keep the computer in a family room rather than in a child's bedroom.
Information on filtering software, computer viruses and online bullying can also be found on the site.
