Thieves have stolen £6.2m of computer processors from a van near Heathrow airport
The American Airlines van, containing the Intel Pentium III processors, was momentarily unattended by its driver when the thieves struck on Sunday morning.
Thieves drove the van out of a BA depot and abandoned it behind a row of shops in nearby Feltham, still containing a quarter of the chip consignment.
The BA depot is a restricted access site, although police are unsure whether the thieves had acquired security passes or if the crime was spontaneous.
Scotland Yard said it believes the theft to be the work of two men. Detectives have interviewed the driver and are examining CCTV footage. As yet, no arrests have been made.
Police have stressed that there were no indications that the theft had any bearing on security arrangements at Heathrow.
The chips arrived in Heathrow from Miami, although their final destination is not known.
