We've seen DJ-style MP3 software before, but one of the main problems with it is that DJs rely on a range of manual controls and vinyl nudges that simply can't be performed using a mouse.
The DAC-2 controller tries to address this by allowing DJs to manipulate the controls of Emission's PCDJ Pro Edition DJ MP3 player (which we also review this month) in a more authentic way. Create a playlist and you can mix it to perfection without touching your PC - assuming you've also got a conventional hardware DJ mixer, that is! Bizarrely, the DAC-2 lacks volume or crossfade controls. This is a real letdown, as otherwise the DAC-2 is a superbly designed and engineered piece of kit. It's also hideously expensive, especially as the software is extra - buy both and you only save a measly £30. The need for a separate mixer also means that only serious DJs should consider it. Why they'd want to is another matter - you can buy a professional DJ's dual-CD player for the same money.
