iTunes 4 shares your music
Posted on 29 Apr 2003 at 08:06
Apple has released a new version of iTunes, its music encoding and management and CD burning software.
However UK users will not be able to take advantage of its most significant new feature, the new iTunes Music Store. Apple's new music downloads service is US only.
However there are some elements of the new iTunes that will appeal. The software now encodes music in the AAC format, which provides a higher quality (some say CD quality) without any increase in file size. AAC files can be played back on the new iPods and are supported by the updated QuickTime 6.2.
iTunes 4 also makes use of Apple's Rendezvous technology to enable users to share their music collections with others on a network. Music can't be copied but it can be streamed to any other computer. Because its Rendezvous, no configuration is required.
iTunes 4 is available from www.apple.com/uk/itunes. A link to the QuickTime 6.2 download - required fdor AAC encoding - is included; alternatively it's available from www.apple.com/uk/quicktime/download.
