HP budgets for first-timers with new printer range

New Deskjets to suit anyone's pocket.
From August it will be possible to buy the HP Deskjet 3550, 3650 and 5159 inkjet printers at £49, £69 and £89 inc VAT respectively.
The former will produce prints up to 2400dpi (dots per inch) using HP's PhotoREt III droplet technology on premium photo paper.
The 3650 and 5150 incorporate PhotoREt IV (offering optional 6-ink printing), resulting in prints at up to 4800dpi. The 3650 produces mono prints at 17ppm (pages per minute) and colour at 12ppm - the 5150 ups this to 19ppm for mono, which it claims as 'laser quality'.
Despite the ongoing furore over the price of ink cartridges, no doubt such keenly priced printers will do well as travellers return from their holidays loaded with digital snaps to print in August.
The new line will also help see off whatever products Dell comes out with when it launches its own badged printers later this year (although a Dell spokesperson wouldn't tell us exactly when). One thing you can be certain of however, is that Dell will use all its muscle to undercut the competition - just as it has with its Axim Pocket PCs.
