iPod's fourth incarnation unveiled

Newsweek has been given a sneak peek and the forthcoming iPod that will officially launch in the US later this week, it says.
Most significantly, slights that rival players last longer should be satisfactorarily swatted with a 50 per cent longer battery life: that's 12 hours playback. It is also about 1mm slimmer than its predecessor.
It's payback time for criticisms of the premium cost of the must-have player, too. Apple will knock $100 off the prices, putting the 40GB iPod at $399 and the 20GB version at $299 - the 15GB is no longer available.
Feature-wise, the new iPod has taken navigational elements from its sibling iPod Mini, with player controls positioned at compass points on the main nav wheel.
There are also easier ways to create and edit playlists, and audio can be sped up or slowed down by 25 per cent: ideal for language learning, for example.
There are no details as yet on UK pricing and availability. You can read the Newsweek preview here.
