Google to add 'must-have' POP3 support to Gmail
Posted on 11 Nov 2004 at 10:27
Google is planning to add POP3 support to its Gmail email service. Currently the 1GB-sized accounts can only be accessed through a Web browser.
POP3 will allow messages to be downloaded to a local client such as Apple's Mail or Microsoft's Outlook and Entourage, making it easier and quicker to browse, filter and file messages.
Google is also working on a HTML version of Gmail's Web interface, which is currently javascript-driven, and in the future may introduce WAP and XHTML variations.
Full anti-virus scanning is also an the pipeline; Google said that it is likely to license technology to this end. Currently the service removes 'obvious' viruses and virus-carriers.
The company hopes to bring Gmail out of beta 'soon', when accounts will be available to all rather than by invitation only.
'We want to make it the best email service in every single dimension so yo have absolutely no reason to use any other,' said Google's Georges Harik.
