Seagate introduces 6Gb one-inch hard drive

Hard drive manufacturer Seagate has begun a 6Gbyte version of its one inch ST1 Series drives. This class of small high capacity disks are becoming more and more popular in portable consumer devices like the iPods and other MP3 players. It is soon expected they will become commonplace in mobile GPS systems and even mobile phones.

Seagate says that the 6Gb ST1 Series can hold up to 150 hours - or 3,000 songs - of high-quality music files streamed at 128Kbps. As it is designed for using on the move, Seagate's ST1 designs have their own shock management `RunOn Technology`. The drive is said to compensate for the vibrations and harmonic distortion caused by such high-motion like jogging and automatically keep the read heads on track

Shock absorbance is handled by what the company calls `G-Force Protection` which is claimed to protect the drive from mishandling and increase robustness.

The Seagate ST1 Series hard drive devices are already used in handheld music players built by Creative, Olympus, Rio, Sanyo and Virgin.
