Sanyo embeds new rechargeable battery for portable devices

Sanyo has developed a new rechargeable battery for portable devices, an alternative to coin-type cells, which will enable much longer charge times in smaller sizes.
The pin-type Lithium-ion battery is about half the size of an AAA battery at 6.8mm x 55mm and by using aluminium alloy for the casing, Sanyo has got the weight down to a mere 5g.
Its size means that it can be fitted on the surface or the edge of a circuit board and in other spaces where standard Lithium ion and Lithium polymer batteries cannot be used.
Despite the smaller form factor, the battery retains the energy density, high-rate discharge and safety features of Lithium-ion, by using the same polar plate structure and composition. Such features, says Sanyo, are difficult to implement in coin-type batteries.
Normally, shrinking the size of the battery would result in lost capacity, but Sanyo has avoided this by using the battery core, comprising the anode, cathode and separator, as the terminal.
Sanyo will begin shipping the batteries this summer while development of even smaller Li-ion cells is at an advanced stage. A 6.5mm x 30mm battery weighing 2.4g was demonstrated late last year.
