Skype users blocked in UAE
Posted on 26 Apr 2005 at 14:58
Skype users in the United Arab Emirates are being prevented from accessing the company's website to buy minutes for making voice calls. The service has proved highly popular with expatriates, who make up about 60 per cent of the 2.5 million population.
No reason for the block has been given, but it is likely that Etisalat, the country's monopoly telephony and Internet provider, is unhappy with the competition Skype provides. International calls made using the software are charged at local rates.
However Skype Journal speculates that there may be something more sinister behind the block: Skype automatically encrypts calls, to the detriment of anyone who might like to listen in.
