Hackers examine OS X kernel for Intel-based Macs

The OS X kernel installed on the Intel-based Macs supplied to some Apple developers contains DRM technology that can prevent parts of the OS from working unless authorised.

This could be used by Apple to prevent OS X being installed on Intel-based PCs other than its own and from being installed on more than one Mac.

The Developer Transition Kit Installer DVD - which contains the current OS X version for Intel Macs, though there is surely much work yet to be done - has been leaked onto a number if BitTorrent sites and hackers are already dissecting it bit-by-bit, some with the express aim of getting it to run on non-Apple hardware.

More information - albeit of a very technical nature - can be found at www.osx86.classicbeta.com.
