Skype musters handsets for Net telephony offensive
Posted on 5 Jan 2006 at 14:40
Wireless networking specialist Netgear has announced a cordless phone that connects directly to the Skype Internet telephony service.
The phone does not require a computer but will need access to a Wi-Fi Net connection, either at home, work or via a public hotspot. It will enable dialled calls as well as calls to the displayed list of Skype contacts.
Panasonic and Philips have also announced Skype-compatible phones but these will also work as standard, landline phones and not have the roaming capabilities of the Netgear handset.
All three companies have declined to set precise release dates and prices though Netgear said it hopes to have its phone ready by the end of March. Philips and Panasonic seem set for summer debuts.
