UK games chart: Mario returns with retro gaming
Posted on 4 Jul 2006 at 12:10
Mario rediscovers his roots in New Super Mario Bros and finds his way straight to number one in this week's ELSPA games chart. Nintendo's offering, for the DS, sees the plumbers once more travel across the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Peach, but with the addition of 3D characters jumping out into the action.
Completing the top three is EA Sports' FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 (PC, PS2, Xbox and Xb360), at number two, and Eidos's multi-format Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend, at number three, reinvigorated by its PSP release.
The only other new entry this week is Ubisoft's Over G Fighters (Xbox 360), the jet fighter game, involving 80 missions and 360-degree cockpit views from aircraft such as the F-22A Raptor.
The main climber this week is Activision's movie spin-off, Over the Hedge, up from nine to four.
Getting format specific, Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War is still top of the PC chart, 2006 FIFA World Cup is number one for the PS2, Hitman: Blood Money continues to do the business for the XBox, and Over G Fighters deposes Moto GP '06 as number one in the Xbox 360 chart.
Without more ado, here is the all-format Top 10 in full (number of weeks in chart in brackets), for the week ending 1 July (full-price games):
1 New Super Mario Bros (1)
2 2006 FIFA World Cup (10)
3 Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend (13)
4 Over the Hedge (2)
5 Hitman: Blood Money (6)
6 Nintendogs (3)
7 Animal Crossing: Wild World (14)
8 Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War (3)
9 The Sims 2 (87)
10 Over G Fighters (1)
