Pragmatic Bookshelf Learn to Program: A Guide for the Future Programmer review
Chris Pine has written a book for complete beginners.
It's a good idea as few books are aimed at this level. He uses the little-known language Ruby, but this doesn't matter as the book deals with basic concepts rather than the specifics of a language. The style is very casual.
The large print and simple, clear screen dumps make everything seem easy. Even so, a complete beginner would probably benefit from more help with the command line, using a text editor and setting up Ruby.
The examples are a far cry from .NET, but they're a good start. If you're struggling with the basic ideas of programming, you need this book.
