MDR-NC11 review

Our Rating 1 stars out of 5

Sony's MDR-NC11 earphones fit in-ear, which blocks some environmental noise, but use active electronics to reduce it further. The set is supplied with an adaptor for use on a plane and a carrying pouch, and is powered by a single AAA battery.

The MDR-NC11 earphones look ungainly, but are comfortable to wear. Fitting them in your ears removes a good deal of noise from sources such as air-conditioning but, as with all in-ear devices, it makes the sounds of chewing and yawning more noticeable. It's a good job the earphones block some sound, because their active electronics makes little further improvement. The most obvious affect of switching it on is a large and unacceptable increase in white noise, particularly with the volume control at a high level. A harsh-sounding mid-range makes it tiring to listen to music with the electronics on or off.

For just £5 more, Sennheiser's PXC-250 noise-cancelling headphones, which we reviewed in Shopper December 2005, sound superior. If you prefer in-ear sets, Creative's Aurvana earphones, reviewed in Shopper September 2006, are better.
