Paraglyph Visual Basic 2005 Black Book review
The subtitle to Steve Holzner's book is 'Comprehensive Problem Solver'. The book has a CD bound into the back containing all the example code, but there is no copy of Visual Basic Express Edition.
The book's approach is task-oriented, so rather than explaining how things work it shows you how to do things. Beginners are advised to glean a general understanding of the Visual Basic language before tackling this book. It does address first principles, but the level ramps up rapidly.
Once you reach the core of the book, there are lots of tables of properties and methods which are just rewrites of the standard documentation. Still, this is a good example of a task-oriented book. If you like learning by example, this book does it better than most.
