AMD strikes back with HD 6950

AMD launches its long-awaited 6900-series graphics cards today. Previously codenamed Cayman, there are two new cards – the AMD Radeon HD 6970 and AMD Radeon HD 6950. These use a different architecture from the already released 6800-series cards, though the changes aren’t as revolutionary as we’d hoped.
The new cards do pull off one trick in common with their lesser siblings, they are very well priced. Our pick of the two is the HD 6950, which provides more than enough performance for most needs at a very reasonable £220 inc VAT.
In our tests this card competed with Nvidia’s more expensive GTX 570, with similar scores across a range of games. The Nvidia card outscored the HD 6950 in 3DMark 11, but the margin in this synthetic benchmark doesn’t justify the £40 price difference between the cards.
Read our AMD Radeon HD 6970 review for architectural details on the new Cayman cards, and see our AMD Radeon HD 6950 review for full coverage on this great new card.
