Nvidia reveals £2,000 GeForce GTX Titan Z graphics card

Nvidia has announced the GeForce GTX Titan Z, the company’s most powerful graphics card to date, which has been built specifically for multi-monitor gaming and next-generation 5K displays. It pairs two separate GPUs on a single PCB to provide serious performance, but also comes with a serious price.

Using a pair of Kepler GK110 GPUs, as found in the original GTC Titan and GTX 780ti, the GTX Titan Z has a total of 5,760 processing cores (2,880 cores per GPU) paired with a massive 12GB of video RAM. Nvidia hasn’t dialled down either GPU to reduce power consumption, either, meaning the full amount of texture units and ROPs – it essentially ties two GTX Titan Black graphics cards into a single PCB.

NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang unveiled the GeForce GTX TITAN Z last night at the company’s annual GPU Technology Conference in San Jose, California. Details such as clock speeds and power consumption have yet to be confirmed, but with Nvidia’s previous GTX 690 two-GPU card hitting 300W it’s possible the GTX Titan Z could demand 350-400W of power from your PSU.

Although the presentation focused on gaming, with incredibly high resolutions and multi-monitor setups in mind, the GTX Titan Z is also aimed at compute users looking to render 3D models, create animations or mine for Bitcoin. It works out cheaper in terms of raw performance than Nvidia’s professional grade Tesla cards, but anyone buying one purely for gaming will be in for a shock when their credit card statement comes through: Nvidia expects the card to cost $3,000 in the US, which translates to £1,800 here in the UK. Factor in VAT and other taxes, and you could be looking at £2,000 for a single graphics card – more than the cost of most PCs.

The GTX Titan Z should be going on sale globally from April onwards, with final pricing to be determined.
